It is clear that Tag heuer faces an embarrassing situation, though not all details are unveiled. To celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary, Tag Heuer recently released the Caliber 1887 automatic movement which it claimed as a brand new movement independently designed and in-house made by itself. However, the fact is that Tag Heuer did not design the movement itself. They actually made the 1887 based on Seiko 6S37, a design dated back to 10 years ago. So Tag Heuer “borrowed” something from Seiko and presented a “surprise” to its 150 anniversary and its loyal fans. Though I believe Tag Heuer must have certain negotiation with Seiko before, I still feel like being treated. The good side is that Tag Heuer will make and assemble the Caliber 1887 in limited number themselves without Seiko’s involvement.
One watch community first found the two movements share something in common. Tag Heuer may have been innocent if not for the community. Here I have my thumbs up for the online watch community who caught Tag Heuer red handed. And this event also proves that internet can do something good to the watch making industry. Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Tag Heuer, made a quick response on line to address the situation. He honestly admitted Tag Heuer’s mistake and that the Caliber 1887 was actually based on Seiko 6S37.
Well, also clear is that the online watch community becomes the No.1 winner of this issue, Seiko comes in the Second, and Tag Heuer is placed the third for making quick and honest response to the situation. Seiko movements do not pale even before top mechanical movements made in Swiss. And we can not deny that Tag Heuer is one of the leading watch brand in the world. I believe people who love this brand will still buy watches from it even though they know this situation.In my opinion, Tag Heuer is a brand word-known for their good designs, and it is not necessary to try too hard or too quick in movement designing.
