As a huge fan of Tag Heuer watches, I am really thrilled at the news that Tag Heuer is set to re-release the SilverStone Chronograph in Feburary 2010 to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
For those who are strange to SilverStone chronograph: the original Tag Heuer SilverStone chronograph was released in 1974. Named after the famous racing circuit in England, it emulated the curvature of the track and featured a design based on “cushion” shaped case of the Monaco. More importantly, it housed the Chronomatic Calibre 11, the first-ever self-winding automatic chronograph with micro rotor. This revolutionary movement provided wearers with precision timing comparable to the standards of professional chronometer instruments.
Powered by an updated version of the Calibre 11 with Dubois-Depraz module, the new Silverstone chronograph will be available in blue or brown dial version, with each version limited to 1,500 pieces. And the new Silverstone chronograph will come with matching perforated alligator straps and stainless steel cases.
The dials, covered by a curved, sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment, features the brand’s original Heuer logo to mark the 150th anniversary. The 30-minute chronograph counter is located at 9 o’clock position, and the seconds counter appears at 3 o’clock position. The date window at 6 o’clock position is hand applied. The chronograph functions are operated through the steel pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock, while the time and date is set through the crown at 9 o’clock..And you know before the original Calibre 11, chronographs had to be constantly hand-wound to keep accurate time, and watchmakers placed the crown at 3 o’clock for easy accessibility. Because the development of the Calibre 11 freed TAG Heuer’s designers from this constraint, Tag Heuer placed the crown of the Monaco and
Silverstone at 9 o’clock.
The retail price, according to Tag Heuer, is $6500.
