For the first time, Ulysse Nardin will join the Monaco Yacht Show 2009, one of the best luxury yacht exhibitions in this planet. To mark this commemorative event, Ulysse Nardin has released the Monaco YS Limited Edition following the launch of Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Black Surf Diver watch.

One significant feature about Monaco YS is that its 42.7mm stainless steel case is exclusively coated with black DLC(Diamond-like-Carbon) that is famous for superb wear-resistance performance. The other feature is that Monaco YS has dark grey applied luminous indexes, which is quite rare to my knowledge. And the result is just fine and tasteful.

And as a special watch for Monaco Yacht Show, it comes with clear theme and nautical features. For example, both the bezel and the dial come with delicate wave patterns. I am glad to see that the wave pattern on the dial is totally different from the one on Black Surf which makes me a little confused. And I love how the 18 ct rose gold wave patterned inserts stands out nicely against the bezel. The rose gold tone is , though not as much as Black Surf, subtly used on the dial as well. We beautiful have rose gold skeletonized hands and also rose gold scale for the small seconds dial that includes the Monaco Yacht Show insignia and the date display. And subdials are lighten up by red hands that tell the power reserve and seconds respectively.

The watch itself is water resistance to 200 meters with guaranteed by screw-down crown with protective shoulders and sapphire crystals at both sides. Inside the watch is the the UN-26 caliber, a reliable self-winding movement based on the adorable ETA 2892-A2. This movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

Monaco YS is completed by a rubber strap accented by ceramic elements that bear the Ulysse Nardin brand signature and “Limited Edition”. It is secured to the wrist by a folding clasp with dual security push-pieces.

To me, Urwerk watches are monsters in today’s watch-making industry. They are challenging the traditional watch designs and aesthetics of time display in the name of futuristic style. If future looks like that, I wish time could stop here. What a Urwerk watch looks like on the wrist? A piece of ugly luxury metal,just to my eyes. Well, I have made my point here. However, Urwerk watches do mean something to many other people who love the future they reflects. And Urwerk watches are really hot today and will be ever hotter in future. And today’s watch review is about the UR 103 collection.

Like previous collections, 103 is presented on white gold, red gold, platinum and in black PE-CVD coated platinum.Sized at 50mm x 36mm x 13.5mm, the streamlined case boasts the so-called futuristic form. And beating inside is the Caliber 3.03, a hand-winding movement beats at 21,600bph/3Hz. It features unique triple base plate in ARCAP P40 black PVD coated and hour satellites and orbital cross in grade 2 titanium.

The time display is no doubt very innovative and impressive. But in my humble opinion, Urwerk just makes simple things complex again in the name of futurism. Four hour satellites with rich SuperLumiNova three numerals each and the minute arc share the effort to tell time clearly at any time-the time is indicated by the hour satellite that is passing the arc of minutes. Hour satellites are controlled by an internal Geneva cross-As a satellite approaches the crown, the Geneva cross engages a pin which rotates the disk 120° so that the new hour takes its position.

At the case back, there is an Control Board inspired by vintage marine chronometers in grade 5 titanium. The control board provides dual 15 minute, small seconds and the 43 hour Power Reserve indicator. Again, it is ridiculous-will you take off the watch and turn over it to see these functions regularly? This watch pales before those watch that display all these straight at the front. In additional, the case back is fitted with a fine turning screw that you can adjust the watch timing by +/- 30 seconds per day.

Beating inside is the calibre Manufacture 13BA05, a 47-jewels self-winding movement with a lightened tourbillon mechanism aesthetically visualized at 3 and 7-days power reserve indicated at 9. The movement also features bi-directional 22K gold winding rotor, hand chiselled plate, angled and blackened bridges with vertical Côtes de Genève finish. Through the sapphire glass at the case back, you can enjoy this charming mechanism.

Bovet Sportster Saguaro Tourbillon watch is fitted with a stylish black rubber strap with ardillon buckle in 18k gold. With breathtaking beauty and unquestionable exclusivity, it will make a fantastic addition to the collection of any serious collectors.
